How to Create a Non-Toxic Life in the UAE

One of the biggest shifts in my health journey was realising that wellness is not only about what we add to the body. It’s also about what we stop exposing the body to repeatedly.

Many people think about toxins in terms of food or household cleaning sprays, but modern life exposes us to synthetic chemicals constantly through:

~ fragrances
~ dishwashing liquid
~ skincare
~ makeup
~ laundry detergent
~ candles
~ air fresheners
~ shampoos and conditioners
~ preservatives
~ pesticides

Many of these products contain ingredients linked to irritation, hormone disruption, inflammatory responses, respiratory irritation, or nervous system stress in sensitive individuals.

Some ingredients used in conventional beauty and household products have also been investigated for potential carcinogenic, endocrine-disrupting, or immunotoxic effects.

One tool I personally use regularly is the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, which allows consumers to search beauty and personal care products and check ingredient safety ratings. I found it incredibly eye-opening when I started learning about how many everyday products contain ingredients associated with skin irritation, allergies, hormone disruption, carcinogenicity, and immune system side effects. This database continues to influence every skincare and cosmetic purchase I make.

For people living with fibromyalgia, autoimmune conditions, migraines, chronic fatigue, allergies, or nervous system dysregulation, reducing your overall chemical load can make a surprisingly noticeable difference. Not because ‘natural’ automatically means perfect, but because the nervous system is constantly responding to environmental input, and overloaded systems often benefit from reducing unnecessary stressors wherever possible.

Over the years, I slowly began swapping products in my home and daily routine for gentler, low-tox or non-toxic alternatives. These are some of the products and brands I genuinely love and continue to use myself in the UAE.

Low-Toxic Shampoo & Conditioner

One of the best low-toxic swaps I ever made was changing my haircare products.

From the age of 15, I struggled with dandruff and an itchy scalp despite trying countless mainstream anti-dandruff shampoos. Nothing ever properly resolved it long term until I switched to haircare products made by The Camel Soap Factory in Dubai. Their shampoo and conditioner completely changed my scalp health, and I no longer have dandruff. I genuinely would not use another brand now.

Their products are made in the UAE using simpler ingredient profiles and natural oils rather than heavily fragranced formulas packed with synthetic additives. The products feel gentle, nourishing, and far less irritating for sensitive skin and scalps.

For people with nervous system sensitivity or chronic inflammatory symptoms, reducing skin exposure to harsh detergents and fragrances every single day can be incredibly supportive.

'Clean' Soap

Skin is the body’s largest organ, yet many soaps contain strong fragrances, sulphates, preservatives, and drying agents that can irritate sensitive skin and disrupt the skin barrier.

I personally love Vaadi Naturals soaps, which are available through Organic Larder, a company with stores across the UAE and a fantastic online shop.

Vaadi soaps feel far gentler than mainstream commercial brands and contain more traditional herbal and botanical ingredients. For people trying to reduce chemical load, even simple swaps like soap can help create a calmer daily environment for the body.

Non-Toxic Makeup

Researching low-toxic makeup swaps is one area that many people find overwhelming because it’s easy to feel attached to a makeup brand you’ve been using for years.

However, conventional makeup can contain synthetic fragrances, preservatives, petroleum-derived ingredients, and heavy metals that sensitive individuals may react to over time, potentially drying the skin and compromising the immune system.

One of my absolute favourite makeup discoveries has been Blinking Owl Acres, based in Texas, USA. They also ship internationally to the UAE.

The founder, Shelley, hand-makes her makeup, oils, and serums using natural mineral-based ingredients, and honestly, the products are beautiful.

The makeup applies easily, gives a lovely healthy glow and finish, lasts all day, and feels lightweight and breathable on the skin. Most importantly, it allows you to feel feminine, polished, and confident, and knowing that you’re no longer coating your skin in harsh chemicals feels liberating.

For many people with chronic illness, feeling safe and beautiful in your skin matters psychologically too.

Non-toxic makeup wipes

Traditional makeup wipes are often heavily fragranced and packed with preservatives and surfactants that can irritate both skin and the nervous system.

A much gentler (and affordable) alternative is WaterWipes, a fragrance-free and alcohol-free wet wipe for babies made with 99.9% water and a minuscule amount of grapefruit seed extract, endorsed by Allergy UK and the Eczema Association of Australasia. These wipes reduce unnecessary chemical exposure around the face and eyes while easily removing makeup. They are available from Spinneys, Carrefour, and AllDay supermarkets across the UAE.

Low-Toxic Home Cleaning Products

Many conventional household cleaning products contain synthetic fragrances, ammonia, bleach, harsh solvents, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals can contribute to headaches, respiratory irritation, skin sensitivity, and sensory overload in susceptible individuals.

After I switched most of my household cleaning products to Rooted Regimen, I no longer felt stressed about harmful chemicals. Feeling calmer about everyday activities like cleaning and laundry can be very beneficial for your nervous system.

Rooted Regimen offers dishwashing liquid, dishwasher liquid, laundry detergent, stain remover, kitchen cleaner, bathroom cleaner, and window cleaner with gentler formulations and lower-tox ingredients.

For people with fibromyalgia or chronic nervous system activation, reducing strong chemical exposure inside the home can help lower the total sensory and inflammatory burden the body processes every day.

Low-Toxic Living Is About Reducing Your Total Load

Low or non-toxic living should not be about fear or perfection; it’s about reducing unnecessary burden on the body wherever realistically possible.

Modern life already places enormous stress on the nervous system through:

~ overstimulation
~ chronic stress
~ pollution
~ poor sleep
~ processed food
~ constant sensory input
~ social and work pressures

For people already living with nervous system dysregulation or chronic illness, small environmental changes can sometimes create surprisingly significant improvements over time. The goal is not to become obsessive or overwhelmed by swapping every product in your home. The goal is simply to create a calmer, cleaner, more supportive environment for the body to function and heal within by going slowly, one product at a time.

Non-Toxic Fragrance

Artificial fragrance is one of the most common triggers for people with migraines, asthma, fibromyalgia, and sensory sensitivity.

Many synthetic fragrances contain dozens of undisclosed chemical compounds hidden under the word ‘parfum’. Instead of artificial home fragrances and perfumes, I now prefer using essential oils like those from doTERRA, which can be added to diffusers around the home. They even offer roll-ons that can be applied directly to the skin.

Scent directly influences the limbic system — the emotional and nervous system centre of the brain — which is one reason fragrance can have such a powerful effect on mood and regulation. Lavender, frankincense, bergamot, and peppermint can feel especially calming or uplifting depending on what your nervous system needs.

Non-Toxic, clean Organic Food

Low-toxic living ultimately begins with food, and this is a topic I am especially passionate about. When I changed my diet to eating 100% organic food, I instantly noticed a difference in my health, energy, and mobility, and I credit organic food as one of the biggest drivers in my recovery from cancer treatment side-effects and fibromyalgia. Hence the name of my site!

The body requires nutrients to:

~ repair
~ regulate hormones
~ support detoxification pathways
~ reduce inflammation
~ produce energy
~ support nervous system function

In order to do this efficiently and properly, eating organic whole foods can help reduce exposure to potentially immune-suppressing factors like:

~ pesticides
~ additives
~ preservatives
~ artificial colourings
~ ultra-processed ingredients
~ monosodium glutamate, often hidden under labels like ‘natural flavours’, ‘vegetable protein’, ‘yeast extract’, ‘soy protein isolate’, ‘sodium caseinate’, ‘maltodextrin’, ‘broth’, ‘pectin’, ‘modified food starch’, and many more

I personally shop regularly from Organic Larder, and I love Carrefour’s convenient range of fresh organic produce from local brands like Bustanica, Armela Farms, and Earth Goods, plus fresh organic fruits and vegetables from farms like Emirates Bio Farm in Abu Dhabi.

Supporting local organic farming in the UAE is something I feel genuinely passionate about because better food quality directly impacts long-term health while also helping the planet.
