Fibromyalgia Awareness Month: How to Relieve Symptoms in Abu Dhabi

Fibromyalgia is far more than ‘just chronic pain’. It is a complex nervous system disorder associated with widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction (‘fibro fog’), sleep disruption, sensory sensitivity, dizziness, digestive problems, and heightened stress responses. Many people also experience anxiety, migraines, autonomic dysfunction, exercise intolerance, depression, and social anxiety.

Research increasingly suggests fibromyalgia involves central sensitisation — where the nervous system becomes highly reactive and overprotective — causing ordinary sensory input, such as stress, movement, or exertion, to feel amplified. Trauma, chronic stress, surgery, burnout, and prolonged nervous system overload are all believed to contribute to the development of fibromyalgia.

While there is no single cure for fibromyalgia, many people experience meaningful and lasting improvement when they reduce the overall stress placed on their body and nervous system. Which is why, during Fibromyalgia Awareness Month in May, I set out to discover some of the best ways people in Abu Dhabi can support their nervous system, reduce stress, and ease symptoms as part of a regular lifestyle — from dining out and gentle movement classes to low-toxic household solutions.

Dine Out in Abu Dhabi — While Avoiding Ultra-Processed Food

One of the biggest shifts in my own fibromyalgia symptoms came from taking food and drinks seriously.

Many people with fibromyalgia report heightened sensitivity to:

~ Additives
~ Preservatives
~ Emulsifiers
~ Monosodium glutamate
~ Artificial sweeteners
~ Excess natural sugars, including fruit sugars
~ Seed oils and highly processed oils
~ Complex carbohydrates and starchy foods
~ Gluten

Many of these fall under the umbrella term ‘ultra-processed food’ (UPF), which can increase inflammation, digestive stress, blood sugar instability, and nervous system overload.

While the majority of café and restaurant menus contain UPF-heavy meals, that does not mean you have to stop eating out. It simply means becoming more intentional with the food you choose.

Try fresh, whole-food ingredients as they tend to feel far gentler on the body than heavily processed fast food or additive-heavy convenience meals. Plan where to dine in advance. Do some research by looking up suitable menus online, and choose your meal before you go, so you know what you can safely eat and look forward to dining out.

Two of my favourite healthier options in Abu Dhabi are:

Amara at WB Abu Dhabi, Yas Island, for fresh Lebanese food. Falafel, tabbouleh, hummus, and batata harra are my go-to dishes. Made with fresh ingredients and no nasties, they never dysregulate me or trigger symptoms.

Antonia, which has restaurants across Abu Dhabi, including Saadiyat Island and its newest location on Yas Island, is great for simple Italian dishes made with quality ingredients. The fresh calamari with a side salad is ideal for lunch, while the organic vegetable pizza on a freshly made sourdough base, with potato wedges cooked in olive oil, is perfect for sharing.

With fibromyalgia, food is not just fuel — it can become medicine.

Eat Organic Whole Foods at Home

Cooking at home is one of the easiest ways to reduce your exposure to additives and ultra-processed ingredients.

Organic whole foods place less digestive and neurological stress on the body because they should not contain synthetic preservatives, stabilisers, colourings, or inflammatory oils.

Simple meals often work best:

~ Oats with berries for breakfast
~ Roasted vegetable salad for lunch
~ Freshly steamed mussels with an onion and celery broth for dinner

All of these are easy to make and delicious! Shop for these staple ingredients to make home cooking easy, nourishing and tasty:

~ Extra virgin olive oil
~ Wild-caught fish, such as canned tuna
~ Sweet and white potatoes
~ Vegetables and fruit
~ Slow-release carbohydrates, such as wild rice and quinoa
~ Hummus
~ Nuts and seeds
~ Hunter’s salted crisps for snacking
~ Dates for a sweet treat

Organic shopping can also help reduce pesticide exposure and unnecessary chemical load.

Organic Larder is one of the best UAE-based options for organic produce and whole-food groceries sourced locally and internationally, all conveniently delivered the next day.

Try Gentle Exercise Instead of Pushing Through

Soothe muscle tension with Acupuncture

Fibromyalgia and aggressive fitness routines rarely mix well. Many people with fibromyalgia experience post-exertional symptom flares even after small workouts because the nervous system and autonomic system struggle to regulate energy output effectively.

Gentle movement is usually far more sustainable than pushing through exhaustion.

Activities like:

~ Stretching
~ Yoga
~ Walking
~ Light resistance training
~ Nervous system-focused movement
~ Intentional breathwork exercises

Practised within capacity-respecting timeframes, such as 10 to 20 minutes, these forms of movement can help maintain circulation, mobility, and nervous system flexibility without overwhelming the body.

Topstretching at Yas Bay offers movement-based sessions that may feel more accessible for people with chronic pain and fatigue.

Acupuncture is one of the few complementary therapies recommended by clinicians for fibromyalgia symptom relief because research suggests it can help reduce pain sensitivity, muscle tension, stress activation, and fatigue.

From a nervous system perspective, acupuncture appears to help regulate autonomic function and calm sympathetic (fight-or-flight) overactivation, which is commonly seen in fibromyalgia.

Many people also report improvements in:

~ Sleep quality
~ Headaches
~ Muscle stiffness
~ Stress tolerance
~ Nervous system regulation

For some people, acupuncture becomes less about ‘fixing pain’ and more about helping the body feel safer and calmer overall.

A good option in Abu Dhabi is BounceBack Physiotherapy on Yas Island, which offers acupuncture and dry needling services.

Low-Energy Social Activities are important, too

One of the hardest aspects of fibromyalgia is isolation. People often stop socialising because they no longer have the energy for loud environments, long evenings, or physically demanding activities.

But loneliness itself can worsen nervous system stress. Low-energy social activities can provide essential connection without overwhelming the body.

Try simple activities in Abu Dhabi like:

~ Going to the cinema
~ Walking with the Abu Dhabi Stride walking and running group
~ Having coffee with a friend for a pre-agreed duration
~ Sitting by the pool or beach on cooler days
~ Attending a breathwork or meditation class
~ Joining an art class (Manarat Al Saadiyat holds regular art classes, from pottery to watercolour painting, for an affordable AED100 per class)

These activities can help reduce isolation while remaining gentle for overloaded, fatigued bodies. Healing is not only biological — it also has psychological and social roots.

Try Nervous System Regulation for symptom relief

Understanding the nervous system completely changed how I viewed fibromyalgia.

Many people with fibro live in chronic sympathetic activation — constantly fluctuating between:

~ Fight or flight
~ Shutdown
~ Overwhelm
~ Hypervigilance

Learning how to shift nervous system states safely can significantly reduce symptom intensity.

Intentional breathwork, vagal nerve exercises, somatic practices, and nervous system regulation techniques can help improve:

~ Stress tolerance
~ Emotional regulation
~ Sleep quality and feelings of restfulness
~ Pain amplification
~ Fatigue patterns
~ Digestion
~ Immune response
~ Interoception (awareness of your internal state)

Bodytree Wellness at Al Manhal offers a variety of therapies that align well with nervous system health approaches, including sound therapy, breathwork, and biofeedback programmes.

Enjoy Walks in Nature across Abu Dhabi

Nature is deeply regulating for the nervous system. Research shows natural environments can help:

~ Reduce stress hormones
~ Balance cortisol and adrenaline production
~ Regulate nervous system activation
~ Support circadian rhythm alignment
~ Reduce rumination and overwhelm
~ Improve mental fatigue
~ Improve emotional wellbeing

For people with fibromyalgia, gentle nature exposure can feel far more restorative than overstimulating indoor environments.

Abu Dhabi’s Jubail Mangrove Park is ideal for a slow, low-pressure walk with scenic views. For an even quieter experience, the waterfront and neighbouring mangrove viewing decks at West Yas are hidden gems, overlooking still waters and verdant mangroves, with Reem Island glittering on the skyline in the distance.

An Abu Dhabi staycay can provide the Reset you need

Sometimes the Nervous System Needs a Full Reset. Many people with fibromyalgia spend years stuck in survival mode. Not because of one major life event, but because of the constant grind of daily life — chores, work, responsibilities, and overstimulation. Sometimes what the body genuinely needs is deep rest away from daily demands.

A quiet staycation can provide:

~ Nervous system decompression
~ Improved sleep
~ Sensory reduction
~ Emotional recovery
~ Reduced cognitive load

In the winter months, I love camping amid the quiet farms and rolling dunes near Al Hayer. For summer, I recommend the beautiful Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara, which offers one of the most peaceful environments in the UAE for genuine nervous system rest and recovery. Secreted away in Liwa Desert, the humidity is lower than in the city, and their large swimming pool provides the perfect place to relax on summer afternoons.

Reduce the Toxic Load at Home

Many people with fibromyalgia report sensitivity not only to food, but also to:

~ Fragrances
~ Harsh cleaning chemicals
~ Synthetic chemicals
~ Detergents
~ Heavily perfumed skincare products

Reducing chemical exposure can help lower the overall sensory and inflammatory burden on the nervous system.

I personally prefer simpler, lower-toxicity products where possible. The Camel Soap Factory creates natural soaps and skincare products in the UAE using simpler ingredient profiles, while Rooted Regimen offers lower-tox household cleaning products, including laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid. Both companies deliver to Abu Dhabi.

Fibromyalgia Management Requires a Whole-System Approach

Fibromyalgia is rarely improved through one intervention alone. For many people, symptom relief comes from gradually reducing total nervous system burden across multiple areas simultaneously:

~ Food
~ Stress
~ Sleep
~ Movement
~ Environment
~ Emotional health
~ Overstimulation
~ Autonomic regulation

The goal is not perfection. It is creating a body and environment that feel safer, calmer, and less overloaded. For many people living with fibromyalgia, that can make an enormous difference. This goal can absolutely be supported in Abu Dhabi by making intentional choices, accessing resources close to home, and building healthier habits for lasting change.
